Gallery 76 Project

The OCAD U Student Gallery began as Gallery 76 at 76 McCaul Street where Above Ground Art Supplies now lives. When Gallery 76 opened its doors in the early 1970s, it was almost immediately recognized as active hub, an underground classroom, and an experimental environment. The gallery staff encouraged alternative learning and explaoration in the fields art and design. Toronto's gallery scene was then budding and buzzing: Art Metropole had just been founded by General Idea; and YYZ , A Space and ChromaZone were making their first marks. The artists, curators, directors and students who passed through Gallery 76 describe it as an incubator, breeding ground, and overall exciting place where something was always happening. It's the aim of the Student Gallery to reconnect with that history and to revive its ethos as we move forward into the future.
